ABOUT OET

About OET

OET is an international English test used to evaluate the language skills of healthcare professionals. It demonstrates proof of English language proficiency in the healthcare environment. The exam is paper-based and held every month. Students are evaluated in Listening (approximately 50 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (45 minutes) and Speaking skills (approximately 20 minutes).

Results will be published online, approximately 20-25 business days after the test. Through the right guidance, candidates who prepare for the OET using a systematic approach can achieve success at their first attempt, regardless of their previous capabilities.

OET is comparatively easier for most healthcare professionals such as nurses, than other General English test like IELTS.

OET FORMAT

OET Format

OET is an international English language test that assesses the language proficiency of healthcare professionals who seek to register and practise in an English-speaking environment. It provides a valid and reliable assessment of all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.

01. Listening.

The Listening sub-test will be shorter, feature a broader range of accents and focus more on professional-to-professional interaction e.g. a doctor to doctor conversation. As per the old test, you will still be tested on your ability to follow facts during a consultation and understand a short talk.

The new Listening sub-test will take about 45 minutes and include three briefer sections as follows:

Section Duration Task
Part A 15 minutes Two separate consultations between a healthcare professional and a patient
Part B 10 minutes Six short dialogues or monologues in workplace settings
Part C 15 minutes Two long presentations or interviews with health professionals
TOTAL 40-45 minutes
02. Reading.

The Reading sub-test will include new task types such as matching, short-answer questions, and a new broader range of documents, such as policy or procedure documents. As per the old test, it will still be relevant for all professions and test your ability to understand texts and source information from multiple texts (‘skim’ and ‘scan’).

The updated Reading sub-test will take 60 minutes to complete and includes three parts as follows:

Section Duration Task
Part A 15 minutes Expeditious (fast) reading task
Part B 45 minutes Six short workplace extracts
Part C Two long presentation passages
TOTAL 60 minutes
03. Writing.

The writing paper asks candidates to write a letter, usually a letter of referral. For some professions a different type of letter is required, e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise a patient, carer or group. Candidates are given case notes which must be included in their letter.

04. Speaking.

The speaking test is in the form of one-to-one conversations with an interlocutor. It starts with a short warm-up interview about the candidate’s professional background. This is followed by two role plays. Candidates have 2–3 minutes to prepare for each role play. Role plays last about five minutes and are based on typical interactions between a health professional and a patient. The candidate adopts their usual professional role (e.g. as a nurse) and the interviewer plays a patient or sometimes a relative or carer. For veterinary science the interviewer is the owner or carer of the animal.
